So as Im back looking for freelance work, I thought it was time to update my reel a little bit

Been quiet for a while,
for the last 5 months or so I've been freelancing over at Guildford with the great bunch from SuperMassive Games.

I had the pleasure of working on Start the Part 2 :Save the world, Dr.Who & the Eternity Clock and a yet unannounced Playstation Move title.

Anyway,
Ive moved on again, back in London freelancing again.
Currently im at an awesome little Post House called Time-Based-Arts. Until mid February, then ill be available again :)

so my contract here at Cinesite ends next week and its time to move on.
Had an awesome time here, met some awesome people that hopefully ill be working with again soon!
I'm sure John Carter will be great, the VFX look amazing!

Very excited to announce that I am now working at Cinesite in London on the feature film John Carter of Mars!
I can't say too much about it - but I think the film is going to be awesome!

Very sad to leave all the great people at Darkside where I've enjoyed working for the last year and a bit. Wish them all the success they deserve!

I animated this monster for Darkside Animation. Part of an online awareness campaign to do with bulimia.
To be honest im not massively happy with the animation, but it was a big learning experience. My first time experiencing clients that dont know what they want.
This spot started out as a live action VFX integration and in the end became this fully animated piece.

Iron Maiden Animation Shot Reel

So Iron Maidens been out for a fair while now, so im sure I can post some shots I did for the project (along with a load of other stuff)

This is not quite all the shots I animated on, but the others I didn't like very much!

Generally speaking im quite happy with the quality of work considering the time frame (about a month) and the budget (ridiculously small) for the whole video. It seems to have been well recieved by fans of the band.
This was my first time animating any 'VFX' style shots - quite different but enjoyable :) Would love to do some more in the future.

As with anything it would of been nice to have more time but alas that is the nature of the beast.

Darkside Animation and Nick Scott Studios came together to imagine and create the music video for the new Iron Maiden track 'The Final Frontier'.
The production cycle went over 8 weeks from concept to completion. A total of 141 shots combined live action with integrated CGI as well as full 3D animation, resulting in a complete running time of five minutes. The Darkside team worked around the clock to bring to life as never before IRON MAIDEN's monster mascot and protector, EDDIE.
Eddie had to hold up both in far and close up shots from any angle in full HD quality, providing challenges for modelling, texture, technical, animation and render artists alike. Custom scripts and techniques were developed to add realism to Eddie's motion and shading, and a slew of techniques were used in combination to bring him to life. Lightwave was used for the rendering and space animation & Messiah:Studio was used for the character animation.

So i just stumbled across a facial take tutorial on Victor Navones site
its awesome! great reading some of the thought process that goes through each frame on a short take..

I had a go at it my self (granted pretty much copying every frame so I cant claim any skill at all but I wanted to see if I could get it to work my self.. heres the vid if anyone is interested!

Blinks

soo as I'm a bit bored I'm trying to remember a demo one of my mentors at AM gave back in class 4 (Sean Ermey) on making blinks look nice and fleshy..

I imagine everything I put in this post will be totally obvious to most folks, I cant claim i discovered any of it my self (or even that its correct!)

so here is a fairly basic blink just using the lid closing attribute on bishop...
Note that the upper and lower lid don't meet right in the middle the top lid does most of the work.. on a real person the top lid does pretty much everything so I think its nice to try and reflect that to a degree..
the standard blink Ive gone for has it starting on f5 closing on f8 holding closed until f10 then opening on f13.

It works ok, its a bit life less and even (timing and spacing wise)

so the next thing I did is add some ease in and out to the lids. Generally speaking I tend to always favour the previous pose so in this case as they closing i favour the open position and favour the closed position when they are opening.
you could and probably should ease into the other key for each part of the blink to.. but I was being lazy and trusting the spline tangents to do that (N.B I'm in linear at this point)

Also I made it so during the closed hold of the blink the top lid actually pushes down on the on the lower lid to add a feel of weight to the lid.. and i increased the opening by a frame. I was trying to achieve a slightly sticky feel to the reopening.

Next I decided the lids were hitting a bit hard as they reach their extreme so I added an extra frame in there and set a settle back 3 frames later (VERY subtle tho).
Also at this point I added some not strictly necessary stuff into the blink. The Bishop rig has a 'compress' control which sorta squeezes the lids.. So I used that and the cheek control to try and make the blink feel attached to the rest of the face.

I splinned it out properly now and added the brows into the blink. You can pretty much do everything you did to the lids with the brows, I was lazy and pretty much did a slow in and out and a very slight settle at the end.

as a last little polish i actually scaled the head ever so slightly on the blink just to add to the organic feel of it. You need to be pretty subtle with this ( probably more than I have been). you can actually stretch the head slight as the eye lids open to their most extreme and then settle it back to a normal scale.

so as graduation is only a few weeks away, I thought I should sort out a new reel. When I say 'new' i just mean a new cut of it as I havnt added any new shots. Infact Ive really been harsh with my selection and gone for a short and sweet reel

So class 3 is over!
Been hard work even with only 1 and a half assignments- and whats more we only have a weekend off before class 4 starts!.

Antway its been my favorite class so far, feeling liek things are starting to click a little now. Mainly down to the brilliant mentor Mike Stern who works over a Dreamworks, and the other guys in my class.

N.B the dialogue assignment will be finished in class 4 and i think that theres a syncing issue with on the dialogue that will be fixed next term!

Term 2 over!

So I finished term 2 of AM, w00t!

Still lots of polishing I can do on this of course :p

Been a hard term with a lot of new stuff to learn. Would love for term 2 to have been twice the length really.. or though i doubt i could afford that!

anyway onto Introduction to acting, so ill need to find me some dialogue clips and ideas for pantomime shot..hmmmmmm..

class 1 progress reel

So class 1 is over!
learnt loads and met a bunch of great people. Now Im looking forward to class 2, maybe ill end up in a class with some of my old class mates :).
